Ripping audio cds to MP3 with VLC
If you aware of, VLC(Video Lan Client) is one of the coolest media players available today. I recently digged out a way to rip Audio CDs to mp3 format using this cute little app. Honestly speaking, with VLC, you can convert CDA files to almost any audio format available.
This is how you can do it:
1) Insert your CD into the drive and open VLC.
2) Select File > Open File. Browse and select the track from the CD.
In the same window, look for Advanced Options

3) Check the Stream/Save checkbox. Click Settings to open the big settings window.
4) In the Output section, check the File checkbox. Click Browse and select your new file name. Check settings I used.

5) Click OK (OK again) to start the conversion
6) Go back to step 1 for the next track (It is simple. You just have to change the filenames - keep the other settings as it is)
Sorry for the Microsoft style explanation; I am on a windows machine. You can always do all these using shell scripts in Linux, I guess. VLC won’t display any progress untill it finishes with the file. VLC supports conversion with upto 512Kbps stream with a maximum of 5 channels.
Don’t have VLC? Download

VLC is way too cool. Did a WMP ~ VLC muv few years ago and am absolutely a fan ever since. And this mymuv widget thing on the right is pretty interesting too!
WMP is good only for WMV format. Also VLC's error correction mechanisms are much better. Good that you muved to VLC.
The widget is on a heavy testing stage
I have vlc player and have been converting videos using the wizard.I’ve been trying to convert wav to mp3… but for some reason it won’t take. It’s the Hawaii50.wav http://www.tripletsandus.com/80s/tv_theme_wav.htm My steps are: In vlc, Open file, browse & select wav. Audio > advance option stream settings>File browse, rename adding the mp3 extention.I’ve tried them all, mpeg ts through raw.Audio codec > Select mp3 > bitrate 192 > click ok > ok It creates the icon but no audio. Any idea what I’m doin wrong? Thanks!
Exact Audio Copy to rip CDs to raw wav + LAME to encode.Absolutely the best combination for mp3s.
Have used VLC for 5 years. and i use it to convert music and films to any kind format. works perfectly every time, exept for films u have to manually add deinterlace. they could make option for that, kuz without it movie will be heavely disorted
